Santiago Calatrava has designed more than 40 bridges around the world  and his latest was completed just days ago in Dallas. The cable-stayed bridge features a 400-foot-high arch of steel wrapped in a concrete skin, and a web of steel diagonal stays that give the bridge its unmistakable Calatrava look. This is Calatrava’s first vehicular bridge in the U.S., and it will open to traffic later this month. The $120 million project began in 2007, and an estimated 42,000 drivers are expected to cross it each day. The bridge is named for renowned civic leader Margaret Hunt Hill.

The project is a small cabin in Victoria’s Central Highlands. The brief for this project was to provide a two stage residential project including a cabin and a house, the first stage of which is shown here. The site contains a beautiful forest of extant Stringybark woodland. The original interest was in the bleached bones of sheep and kangaroo skeletons found in forests and farms, and in the thickening of these joints, needed to carry additional loads. Hundred of bird cages strung up across the alley way in Sydney. They are big, small, round, square, short, tall bird cages and everything in between. Just off Angel Place and one street back from George Street you round a corner to find the laneway where a canopy of empty bird cages hang above the street making graphic shapes and shadows against blue Sydney skies. This permanent public art installation plays a soundscape of birdsong. The calls, tweets and twittering are from bird species that used to live in this area, before the city replaced their native habitats. The installation is known as ‘Forgotten Songs’ and is part of the Laneways: By George Hidden Networks project.

Emmanuelle Moureaux architecture + design has completed ‘Sugamo Shinkin Bank’,a credit union located in Shimura, Japan. The design, an offset volume of rainbow-like layers, is the third branch designed by Moureaux.

Tacked slabs in twelve saturated colors dominate the exterior facade and contrast the stark white panels that enclose the building. Looking to create a refreshing atmosphere with a palpable sense of nature, the color gently transition until they disappear into the sky. Softly reflected onto the white surfaces, the hues create a warm and diffused exterior which provide a sense of ease and solitude.                                                                 At night, the layers are faintly illuminated, varying in accordance to weather and the season.

Emmanuelle Moureaux is a french architect and designer residing in Tokio. She graduated in 1995 from the architecture school in Bordeaux.
